John Greenfield was born in Croydon England in 1840 and immigrated to New Zealand in 1882, spending the first nine years in Dunedin. He moved to the Hawkes Bay to become a buyer for Neal and Close drapery, and in 1895 became the manager of the Hasting branch of Napier Blythe and Co drapery. In late 1910 wanting to retire John put his store up for sale. Ernest Westerman tookover the business in 1911, renaming the business Westermans and Co.
