In 2005 the artist Billy Apple, came to Hawkes Bay to initiate one of his most ambitious projects. Apple's intention was to bring his own named apple variety into supermarkets as an artwork, a "Billy Apple" for purchas, which would find its way into homes across the nation and overseas. Despite the fact that the apple did not make it into the market and the idea remains unrealised, this project sparked many future threads in Apple's work.
