Anna Elizabeth Jerome Spencer led an unconventional life. This included changing her name at 49 years of age. Throughout her life to that point, and beyond, her family and close friends knew her as Bessie Spencer. She called herself that and signed personal letters as such. But in 1921, the year that she founded the first New Zealand Womans Institute, she adopted the family name , Jerome (her third give name) to use as her first name in public life.
